The Reluctant Spy: A Novel Set in 1st Century Palestine

Today’s the day—the culmination of that walk twenty-two years ago in the Stillwater cemetery in which Zacharias began to talk out loud through me. Now, all these years later, his words will be heard and read by others.

They’ll also hear the words of John the Baptizer, Zacharias’ son, who spoke through me the following day. Those words, given so freely by the Universe, were the genesis of the historical novel The Reluctant Spywhich is now available as an ebook and paperback from Amazon.

The story is told in three parts:

Part I takes place in Judaea. Here readers meet the following characters: Jonathan, who’s undergoing a crisis of faith; Chaviva, his wife whose health is compromised; Davi, his daughter, who may suffer because of his choices; Daniel, a friend he’s not heard from in sixteen years; Tov, a slave who sees all; John the Baptizer, who belabors pilgrims at the Jordan: Benjamin, who begins his life-journey; and, finally, Hashem, the God of the Israelites.

Part II takes place in the Galilee. There the exorcist and itinerant preacher Yeshua is added to the mix of characters. There, too, Jonathan begins to face his demons and his dreams.

Part III takes place in Perea and Judaea. Events race forward to completion. Jonathan—whose memoir this is—rediscovers himself.

  1. HUGE congratulations.
When life (and my unread pile) settle a little I will assuredly buy and read it. I am looking forward to that time too.

    1. Dear Sue, like you, I have a pile of books next to my bed. However, they never get read because of my glaucoma vision problems. I'm almost entirely an e-book reader now. But even with that, I have a long list of books to read and so I absolutely understand not getting to something quickly! I hope you will enjoy the novel when you do get a chance to read it. Peace.

  2. Congrats on getting it published, Dee!

"The ebook sells for $9. Of that amount, I will earn $6.28 for each book sold."

Wow...that is a huge difference. I wonder when paper books will disappear entirely. I imagine they will become a novelty.

I like that you used Tov as a name! It means good in Hebrew, doesn't it?

    1. Dear Sandi, excellently right--Tov does mean good in Hebrew and Tov in the novel is such a good man. So understanding. Every time he came into the story he did something that surprised me! Peace.

    2. The quotation on my blog is a line from a song about God surrounding and protecting a person.

I started a story..a long time ago...about a young man on a quest with his friends (in the style of Hinds Feet on High Places). I named him Tov. :)

    3. Dear Sandi, thanks for stopping by to let me know. I understand now what the quote in your posting is saying.

The name Tov was just exactly what the character in "The Reluctant Spy" seemed to be to be--a good man. Peace.

  3. What a thrill it must be to go to Amazon and see your hard-earned book there! I love that shoppers can look inside the pages and the cover is wonderful. Who designed it? Must be even more thrilling to hold a copy in your hand!

Best of luck with the contest. Bask in the satisfaction this project gives you because you sure earned it with you life-long devotion to the story.

    1. Dear Jean, the cover designer is my long-time friend Sally in St. Paul, Mn. We worked together on many projects before we both retired. The printing in the sand represents the letters for the name "Yeshua." I forgot to tell people that on the ISBN page of the book! Peace.

    1. Dear Joanne, I suspect, given the length of the novel that you'll need to put it on the table and flip the pages as you read them. I do so hope the novel meets your expectations. Peace.

    1. Dear Patti, thank so much for buying the book. I hope when you do get to it, the wait will have been worth it! I'm nervous about whether readers will like the book. If you do, please leave a comment on Amazon. Next week, I hope to write a review on my post of a book a fellow blogger published about three weeks ago. I read it and just loved it! Peace.

  9. So happy for you to have your book launched. Isn’t it sad though how little an author makes on her book? I was quite surprised when mine was published with making pennies on the paperback. I’ll be buying the Kindle version but I, too, have several books waiting in the wings before I will get to reading it. Anyway, congratulations!
